Gentle 10-Step Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone Skin in 2026

If you have acne-prone skin, you probably know how tricky it can be. One wrong product and your skin can get angry, red, and break out even more.

After trying dozens of products myself, I finally built a gentle but effective routine that cleared my skin without making it dry or flaky. The secret? Keeping things simple, using the right order, and choosing products that repair your skin barrier instead of destroying it.

Here’s my complete 10-step skincare routine for acne-prone skin that I still follow in 2026.

1. Gentle Cleanser
Start with a mild cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin.
My favorite: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser — it’s super gentle but still cleans well.

2. Toner (Optional but Recommended)
I use a hydrating toner with niacinamide to calm my skin and control oil.

3. Niacinamide Serum
This is a game changer for acne. It reduces inflammation, controls oil, and helps fade marks. I love The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc.

4. Lightweight Moisturizer
Never skip this! Even oily skin needs hydration. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion is perfect.

5. Sunscreen
The most important step! I use EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 — it’s lightweight and doesn’t cause breakouts.

6. Makeup Remover / Oil Cleanser (if wearing makeup)

7. Second Cleanser
Same as morning — CeraVe Foaming Cleanser.

8. Treatment (Retinol or Salicylic Acid)
2–3 times a week I use CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum. On other nights I use a gentle salicylic acid product.

9. Moisturizer
Same as morning or a slightly richer one if your skin feels dry.

10. Spot Treatment (Optional)
For active pimples, I use Mighty Patch pimple patches or a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment.

This routine is simple, affordable, and most importantly — gentle. You don’t need 15 expensive steps to have clear skin. Consistency and the right products make all the difference.
